Exemplar 5 Meeting the Professional Teaching Standards

Institution: Queensland University of Technology

e-Portfolio context: Bachelor of Education - In 2009, the Faculty of Education embedded the ePortfolio system to support classroom placements and internships across the Bachelor of Education course. The program was recognised as a valuable means of supporting students in building an awareness of their capabilities and how these map to the Qld Professional Teaching Standards. Student feedback indicates the effectiveness of the ePortfolio approach in education

Dates of provision: Since 2009

Reason for implementation: In Queensland, teachers must be registered against the Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers. It is required as part of the accreditation of the Bachelor of Education that the institution be able to evidence the points where students are 'taught' in direct alignment to these standards and where in the course students have the opportunities to develop the skills and abilities which enable them to meet the professional standards, In order to do this Student ePortfolio has been embedded across the Bachelor of Education to provide support for activities related to students developing and recording evidence of their attainment of the professional standards for teachers.

Purpose/s: ePortfolio supports reflective practice activities linked to class placements and internships. Students develop their ePortfolios to provide evidence of standards attainment. This feeds into the registration process which they will go through after graduation. ePortfolio is also central to authentic assessment tasks such as the exit interview, which mirror real world interview situations and prepare students to engage with departmental and independent school interview processes.

Learning processes involved: Information capture, Information retrieval, Planning, Reflection, Feedback, Presentation

Practice: fully developed

Key staff involved: Unit Co-ordinator, tutors and eLearning Services support staff
