At Edinburgh the main push to introduce and use e-portfolios has come from the centre, rather than from front line teaching, but to be successful we recognise that it is essential to embed the e-portfolio into core teaching and learning activities. Simply to provide an add-on tool will never result in effective use. The University of Edinburgh is not the sort of institution where the centre can issue a directive about what will happen in schools and colleges, so the strategy has to be to persuade and show effective examples, and work with course teams who can see benefits from using the eportfolio. Such examples are now emerging, we have a small number of champions, enthusiasts who believe the use of the e-portfolio is helping students engage with learning in new ways.
The exemplars we have selected are intended to illustrate a range of current activities.
Whole course use: Business Studies (undergraduate 2nd year); Nursing Studies (taught postgraduate)
Cross institution use: Graduate Attributes "My Edge" ;
Continuing Professional Development of staff: Principal's Career Development Scholarships (a specialist programme, involving all schools, for research students seeking to develop teaching related skills)
Transition to and from University: Possible SQA Scottish Bacc.
Extra-Curricular : Working with the Students' Association to provide support for class reps and to help them recognise and gain from their work in that role.
