e-Portfolios in a specialist teaching programme  Exemplar 4

Institutions: Massey University, College of Education; Canterbury University, College of Education

Massey and Canterbury Universities are collaborating in the provision of postgraduate special education qualifications that are delivered at a distance. We are using e-portfolios across a Specialist Teaching programme with endorsements across the professional practice areas of Resource teachers of Learning and Behaviour, Blind and Vision impairment, Deaf and Hearing impairment, Autism, and Early Intervention. The project will ultimately provide high-quality teaching for children with special needs.

Dates of provision:  2011

Reason for implementation:

Purpose/s: Document the achievement of learning goals

Learning processes involved: Reflection, Collaboration.

Practice:  developing

Key staff involved: Dr Mandia Mentis

Overview of ePortfolio use:

The first cohort of 160 students are using the e-portfolio to document their learning goals and how these align with the competencies for the domain areas of each endorsement, upload their artefacts as evidence of meeting these competencies, post their reflective comments on each domain area and their self assessment of learning goals and then finally their overall professional philosophy. A screen shot shows how the student could collect their evidence.
